Eight years in, we chose to start again
AssetPool is eight years old. Our customers track more than a million assets on the platform and have completed over seven million inspections with it, across Canada, South Africa and the UK.
By most measures, that is a business that could simply keep going. Add features, raise prices, ride the installed base. Instead, we rebuilt the platform from the ground up and called it AssetPool Nova.
That decision can look like a new venture. It isn’t. Nova is the result of eight years spent in the field with inspectors, technicians and asset owners, and it is built on what that work taught us.
We saw the market changing
A few years ago, the signals became hard to ignore. Three shifts were happening at once.
- AI moved from novelty to expectation: Asset owners started asking not just “what did the inspector record?” but “what does it mean, and what should I do next?” Answering that well requires data structured for reasoning, not just storage.
- The field went mobile-first: Technicians work on phones, often offline, and they need the asset’s detail & history in their hand at the moment of inspection, not back at the office.
- Compliance got heavier and more personal: Insurers, regulators and boards want evidence: who inspected what, when, what condition it was in, and how that changed over time.
We could have bolted these onto our existing platform. Many vendors are doing exactly that. We concluded it would leave us, and our customers, with the same foundations dressed in new features. So we started again.
New platform, old principles
Nova is new code. The thinking behind it is not. Eight years and millions of inspections taught us a handful of things we were not willing to compromise on.
- The asset comes first, not the form: Many inspection tools are built around forms: fill it in, submit it, move on. The form is finished, but nobody is tracking the state of the thing being inspected. In Nova, the asset register is the primary object, and condition is a first-class attribute with a full record of where it came from.
- Pass and fail is not enough: Our original platform recorded pass or fail. Real equipment lives in between. Nova records results at checkpoint level, including a “passed with caution” state, so you can see a fire door or extinguisher drifting towards failure before it gets there.
- History belongs in the field: The single most requested capability from long-standing customers was simple: show the technician what happened last time, on site. Nova puts the full inspection history on the asset, on the phone, grouped by month, with failure reasons and who inspected it.
- AI is only as good as the data under it: Large language models are available to every software company. What isn’t available to everyone is a clean, structured, asset-centred record of condition over time. That is what makes AI answers useful rather than plausible-sounding nonsense, and it is why we got the data model right before switching the AI layer on.
- Quality is engineered, not hoped for: Nova is backed by an automated testing framework covering the API, web, real-device mobile, offline use and load, running on every release. In a market filling up with quickly assembled apps, that matters when your compliance record depends on it.
Longevity is not leadership
The field service and inspection market has well-known names that have been around for a long time. They earned their position, and many do a solid job of what they were designed for: scheduling, quoting, invoicing and job management.
But being first, or biggest, is not the same as being built for what comes next. Platforms designed fifteen or twenty years ago were shaped around the job and the paperwork, not the long-term condition of the asset. That choice is baked into their data models, and it is very hard to undo.
You can see the result in how AI is arriving across the industry. Much of it is an assistant layered over an existing system: helpful for drafting text or summarising a job, but limited by the structure underneath. If the data doesn’t track the state of each asset over time, no model can reliably tell you which assets are deteriorating, which sites carry the most risk, or where to send your team first.
Every platform in this space will eventually face the choice we made. Some will rebuild. Others will keep layering. We chose to do the hard work early, while we had the domain knowledge and the customer base to get it right.
Why choose AssetPool Nova?
If you are choosing a platform today, you are really choosing what your data will be able to do for you in three to five years. Here is what Nova offers that a legacy platform struggles to.
- A true picture of asset health: Every asset carries its condition, compliance status and risk profile, built from real inspection results rather than a ticked form.
- Earlier warning, not just records: Checkpoint-level results and a “caution” state show you what is deteriorating before it fails an audit or fails in service.
- Built for the technician: Mobile-first, with the asset’s full history available on site, which our longest-standing customers tell us changes how they work.
- AI that has something real to reason over: Because the data model is asset-first, capabilities such as natural-language questions over your data and image-based anomaly detection are grounded in evidence, not guesswork.
- Eight years of domain depth, without eight years of technical debt: You get a team that has lived through a million assets and millions of inspections, on a platform engineered for the next decade.
- Accessible at any size: Pricing tiers start small enough for a single branch or a small service company and scale to enterprise.
The question is not whether a platform has been around a long time. It is whether it was built for where your industry is going.
Built on what we know, ready for what’s next
Nova may look like a new product. In reality it is eight years of listening, learning and inspecting, rebuilt on foundations designed for an AI-driven decade.
We made the hard call so our customers don’t have to make it later. If you are weighing your options, or wondering whether your current platform will keep up, we would welcome the conversation.
